How to Remove Cat Pee Smell from a Carpet Permanently

The smell of cat pee is particularly unpleasant because it’s very strong. When you forget to clean the litter box, and/or the cat decides to do their business in the wrong place – on the carpet, for example – it’s necessary to act as quickly as possible. Besides the nuisances related to the smell, the cat may also recognize their urine and decide to do it again (or indirectly encourage their neighbours to do it!).

Are you wondering how to remove cat pee smell? Here are some tips that will undoubtedly help you put an end to this stubborn odour.

Soak Up the Urine

If the urine is still fresh, you should soak it up very quickly so that it doesn’t seep into the fibres. To do this, you can use some paper towel or a soft and porous cloth (which you should throw away afterwards or clean in the washing machine at a high temperature).

Is the urine already dry? You can lightly moisten the affected area with cold water and soak up as much of the urine there as possible. Avoid rubbing, and simply dab the carpet with your paper towel.

This technique alone won’t let you get rid of the smell, but it may eliminate most of your cat’s urine. You can then use the methods suggested below.

Steam Clean

Do you have a steam cleaner? Good news! This will help you get rid of this annoying smell. Thanks to its high temperature, steam is ideal for disinfecting.

Run your steam cleaner along the area to be treated without using detergent or ammonia. If you want to use a detergent, you should test it first on a small, hidden part of the carpet. Finally, make sure your carpet can withstand a very high temperature. Carpets made of synthetic materials, for example, are not always resistant to this type of operation. Look into this before using this method.

Alternative Solutions

A Lemony, Disinfecting Mixture

The first household remedy involves mixing together a tablespoon of baking soda, a teaspoon of lemon juice, 3 drops of essential oil of lemon, and a glass of water. Pour this mixture into a spray bottle and shake it to mix the ingredients. Spray the area to be treated, let dry, then vacuum.

In addition to cleaning and disinfecting the area, this amazing mixture will leave behind a pleasant lemon scent.

Water, Vinegar, and Baking Soda

The second household remedy for eliminating cat pee smell is simple and effective. For this, you just need to mix one-and-a-half cups of hot water with half a cup of white vinegar. Pour an adequate amount of this mixture on the smelly area or spray it. Let work for 3 to 5 minutes, then dry with paper towels. For greater effectiveness, you can also sprinkle some baking soda on the area where the cat did their business. Wait until the area is totally dry, then vacuum.

All these tips are reserved for simple rugs and carpets that don’t require special care. If you want to treat an oriental carpet or a wool carpet, for example, it’s better to avoid taking the risk of cleaning them yourself. Calling in a professional is the only way to completely eliminate the odour without damaging the carpet. Creating a ring on a beautiful rug while trying to clean up cat pee would be an unfortunate experience, so before making a mistake, don’t hesitate to contact a professional.

How to Clean a Carpet Stained with Oil Without Discolouring It

Eliminating an oil stain on a carpet requires that numerous precautions be taken. The oil seeps into the fibres very quickly and becomes particularly difficult to remove. To successfully eliminate them, some people make bad decisions and unwittingly discolour their carpets despite only wanting to remove a simple grease stain. How to clean a carpet without damaging it? Here’s a look at some different possible methods.

Soak Up the Oil as Quickly as Possible

The first thing you should do to remove a fresh oil stain is to soak it up as quickly as possible. To do this, you can use:

Paper Towels

As soon as possible, dab the stained area with paper towels. Don’t hesitate to use several if a substantial amount of oil has been spilled. This will let you prevent the stain from spreading and the fibres from being completely soaked with grease.

Talcum Powder

Much like paper towels, talcum powder will absorb the grease and prevent it from sticking to the carpet. It’s a fast solution that can reduce the damage. You should then vacuum to remove the talcum powder.

Earth of Sommières

Little known, Earth of Sommières is an excellent natural stain remover. It’s a clay that has been used since the 19th century that comes from the village of Sommières in the south of France. Ideal for removing grease stains on carpets, it’s 100% natural, non-flammable, and non-toxic.

Flour

You don’t have talcum powder or Earth of Sommières at your disposal, but you’ve just stained your carpet with an oil product? You can attempt to absorb the oil quickly with a little flour. However, be careful not to create clumps, which could be even harder to eliminate (especially if you let them dry accidentally).

Vacuum Before Cleaning

Before cleaning your carpet, you should make sure that it’s clean and contains no dust that – once wet – becomes hard to remove. Of course, you should also make sure that the head of your vacuum cleaner is clean and not rusty.

Soapy Water

Soapy water is usually a safe bet, especially if the soap is mild and well diluted. To clean the carpet, just soak a sponge or a cloth in your soapy water and delicately clean the dirty area by making very gentle rotations. Be careful, however, if your carpet or rug is very delicate, since even slightly soapy water can discolour the fibres and diffuse the colour or mix it with the neighbouring colours.

What About Stain Removers?

Stain removers should be avoided when cleaning a carpet. Overly aggressive, they should only be used after conducting a prior test on a hidden part of the carpet (behind or beneath a piece of furniture, for example). Stain removers often appeal to consumers, who appreciate them for their speed and convenience, but they can seriously alter the colours of your carpet, and their effect is irreversible.

Call in a Professional

Do you have a carpet or rug that you’re particularly attached to that has been stained and you don’t know how to remove the dirt without discolouring the fibres? Before engaging in improvised cleaning, you can certainly contact a professional. They’ll be able to offer you solutions and take care of your carpet so that it regains its original appearance. What might seem complex to you is very simple for them; in no time, they’ll solve a problem that you may never have been able to overcome without the right tools.

Cigarette Odour Removal in Your Car: What Are the Solutions?

Tobacco smoke is a persistent odour that becomes particularly unpleasant when it “cools.” People who spend time in a space that smells like tobacco can be bothered by this smell, and these nauseating fumes can seep into their clothes (and sometimes even their skin). How can you remove cigarette odours in a car? Here are a few ideas to help you make your interior fresh and breathable again.

Cleaning It Yourself

When it comes to cigarette odour removal, do you prefer to clean your car yourself? Here are several solutions that are more or less natural, depending on your needs and expectations.

Cleaning the Entire Cabin With Synthetic Products

To eliminate cigarette odours, you’ll have to clean the seats and carpets thoroughly, as well as the windows, air ducts, and plastics. For this, you can opt for cleaning products designed for this purpose. In big box stores or specialty stores, you’ll find shampoos for seats and carpets, cleaners and deodorizers for plastics, and cleaning liquids for the windows.

Don’t forget to air out your car after applying all these products, especially if you have young children or if you’re pregnant.

To avoid any risk associated with the use of synthetic products and to protect the environment, you can also opt for natural products.

Cleaning the Entire Cabin with Natural Products

It’s quite possible to clean your car with natural products to eliminate tobacco odours. To do this, you can absorb the unpleasant fumes coming from the car seats and carpets with baking soda. Sprinkle some baking soda on all the porous areas of your cabin, then scrub them with a brush, a cloth, or your hand (using circular movements). Let it sit for at least 30 minutes, then vacuum twice. Note that the more you let the baking soda work, the more effectively it will absorb the bad smells. However, avoid using baking soda on wet areas, as this may leave white rings behind.

Water and vinegar, meanwhile, is ideal for cleaning the windows and plastics. Finally, don’t hesitate to place a small piece of activated charcoal in the cabin; this is extremely absorbent and is therefore frequently used as a natural deodorizer.

Empty and Clean the Ashtray

This might seem obvious, but we don’t always think to empty the ashtray when cleaning a car. Empty it and clean it thoroughly with water and soap if it’s removable. If it’s built into the car, clean it with a damp sponge and a little dishwashing liquid. You can then place some charcoal, thyme, roasted coffee beans, or lavender inside the ashtray for a few days to completely eliminate the stale tobacco smell.

If the cigarette smell persists, you can consider replacing the air filter.

Call in a Professional

These tips often prove effective but remain inconvenient and require long hours (not to mention that it’s necessary to be able to air out the car and to have a power source near the vehicle). If you really want to achieve satisfactory results, you’ll also have to remove the seats in order to access the carpets located beneath them. For all these reasons, relying on a professional is an inexpensive and extremely effective alternative that will save you valuable time. The result will be optimal, because the cigarette smell will remain completely neutralized.
