How to get stains out of fabric upholstered furniture
It’s a disaster! One of your guests spilled red wine on your best fabric armchair. What can you do to remedy the situation quickly? The truth is that cleaning fabric furniture can be a big hassle. You can’t just throw your fabric furniture, mattresses or leather furniture into the washing machine like you can with dirty clothes or drapes! However, they’re items you use every day and, as a consequence, are not only are subject to accidental stains, but can also harbor dirt and dust mites. That’s why it’s recommended to have them professionally cleaned at least once a year. But let’s get back to our red wine stain, which is quietly soaking into the fibers of your armchair upholstery.
Cleaning a stain on fabric furniture
Before throwing it out, try cleaning your fabric armchair using these home hacks. To clean a fresh stain, first press on the stain with a paper towel to absorb as much of the liquid as possible. Make sure not to rub it! Doing so could cause the stain to spread, in addition to making the pigments in the liquid penetrate even deeper into the fibers of the upholstery. Next, quickly apply a paste of one part baking soda to one part water over the entire stain. Let it stand for at least an hour, moistening the area periodically with water from a spray bottle. Use a wet rag to remove the baking soda paste and then blot the area with a dry cloth.
Don’t have any baking soda on hand? You can use flour (sprinkle some on top of the fresh stain, work it in with a brush, moisten the area with water and blot dry) or club soda (pour over the stained area, let it foam, continue adding club soda until the stain disappears and then blot dry).
Were your guests already long gone when you noticed the big stain on your armchair? There are several solutions that could prove effective for removing stains that are several hours old on fabric upholstery:
- A mixture of dish soap and peroxide
- Baking soda mixed with vinegar
- Hot, almost boiling water
Apply one of the above mixtures to the stain and let it soak in for a few minutes. Spray it with a little water with lemon (to leave a fresh scent) and then gently blot the fabric. If the stain is still there, you can repeat these steps.
