Is It Possible to Deep Clean a Mattress with Natural Products?
Whether you want to deep clean a used mattress, you need to eliminate the unpleasant odours related to a child’s bedwetting, or you simply want to disinfect a mattress, there are several natural and rather effective solutions. Here are some tips that can help you regain a clean and healthy mattress without using harmful or non-ecological products.
Warning
While it’s possible to disinfect and deodorize a mattress yourself naturally, it’s nevertheless recommended to rely on professionals to achieve satisfactory results. Indeed, if you have a good-quality mattress and you don’t want to take any risks, if a contagious person slept on the mattress, or if you can’t get rid of certain pests, it’s better to opt for the more radical solutions proposed by experts.
Below, we offer you simple solutions that may help you on a day-to-day basis if your mattresses are only slightly damaged.
1 – White Vinegar and Baking Soda
This cheap solution can help you clean and disinfect your mattress. It’s also natural and non-polluting.
Pour one litre of white vinegar (also known as distilled vinegar or spirit vinegar) into a basin with fairly high edges. Add one cup of baking soda. Please note that this mixture will cause a chemical reaction that may surprise you the first time (the solution will swell and foam up). Protect your eyes and open the windows during this operation.
Wear cleaning gloves and use a big sponge, then, once this has been generously soaked, scrub the surface of the mattress.
Let dry in open air (possibly in front of a fan) until the mattress is no longer wet. Please note that this cleaning solution may leave a slight vinegar smell on the mattress.
2 – Essential Oil and 70% Alcohol
The alcohol disinfects while the essential oil provides a fresh scent, thereby deodorizing the mattress.
To obtain your cleaning solution, mix 350 mL of water with 150 mL of 70% alcohol in a bottle equipped with a sprayer. Add 5 drops of essential oil of lemon to this mixture.
Spray the surface to disinfect and deodorize it, then let dry in open air, possibly in front of a fan.
3 – Mixture of Essential Oils and Hot Water
This preparation is highly effective at deodorizing a mattress; however, it doesn’t let you deep clean or disinfect the stains.
In a bottle equipped with a sprayer, mix 8 drops of essential oil of citronella, 8 drops of essential oil of palmarosa, 8 drops of essential oil of lemon, and 8 drops of essential oil of lemongrass. Add a little warm water and spray your preparation on the areas of the mattress to be treated. Let dry.
4 – Essential Oil and Baking Soda
In a bottle with a sprayer, mix the equivalent of 2 tablespoons of baking soda, half a glass of hot water, and 8 drops of tea tree oil. Spray then let dry to enjoy the result.
5 – Earth of Sommières
Renowned for its many qualities, earth of Sommières absorbs odors and neutralizes them quickly. You can therefore sprinkle this clay on your mattress, rub it with your fingers to let the powder penetrate, and let act overnight (or longer). The next day, you’ll just have to remove the earth with a vacuum cleaner.
Finally, note that the sun can disinfect a mattress thanks to the power of the ultraviolet rays. To do this, you’ll have to expose it for at least 5 consecutive hours to the sun’s rays (so it’s best to wait until summer). Lastly, a steam cleaner may also be an eco-friendly solution, as long as it always remains at least 1 cm from the surface of the mattress. However, note that steam can’t replace a disinfectant solution.
