Which carpet cleaner is best for pet urine?

Having your own pet is probably one of life’s biggest pleasure, for some it can even be a life long dream. They make the best companions and make a house feel like a home. From time to time, our best friends can have little accidents on our carpets, regardless of whether they are potty-trained or not. A change of home, a medical issue, separation anxiety and most importantly for our article, previous accidents, can all contribute to a urine-stained carpet in your home. We will explore here the different technics for cleaning your carpet efficiently so that previous accidents do not lay the path to many others.

In treating pet urine stains, speed will be of the essence. Firstly, try to absorb the puddle with layered humid paper towels and weigh them down with heavy objects such as cans of food. The moisture will help to soak up the urine and the weight will make sure that the absorption goes deep into the fibres. Once you have left this contraption in place for at least ten minutes, remove it and wet the area with a little water from the outside of the stain in. Now it is time to use an enzyme cleaner. These are nontoxic and work by breaking down the stain into its basic elements. They will eliminate the compounds that create not only the stain but also the smell. The proteins, left over from the urine, will be broken down and will stop your pet’s impulse to urinate again in the same spot.

Enzymatic cleaners can be purchased in most pet stores and in order for them to work, they have to be kept on the wet area for several hours but as always do read the manufacturer’s instructions and do make sure that the cleaner is suitable for the type of fibres present in your carpet or rug before use.

If you prefer making a more natural enzymatic cleaner, you probably already have all the ingredients at home! In a large bottle of soda water, add brown sugar, yeast, and warm water, then using citrus peels of any kind, add them one by one to the bottle. Screw the cap back on and give the concoction a shake until the sugar dissolves. Place the bottle in a shaded warm or hot area of your house, like a linen cupboard, and let the mixture ferment for a couple of weeks, opening it a few times a day to release the pressure. Once the two weeks are up, strain the liquid and discard the peels and your homemade enzymatic cleaner is good to be used.

Simply hand washing or using an electric carpet cleaner will not get rid of the stain or odour and will lead to further accidents! If you do not want to tackle the problem yourself with an enzymatic spray then it is time to think about expert help. Call on a reputable professional carpet cleaning company that will no doubt have a specific solution for treating pet urine stains and say goodbye to bad odours and bad habits!
